To understand Nietzsche, it’s crucial to understand the context that led him to his ideas. Before I read the original works of Nietzsche, I wanted to read this one to get a broader introduction and set the stage.
“For Rée the fact that existence lacked meaning became a source of despair; Nietzsche, by contrast, saw the same lack of meaning as the source of human freedom.”
Nietzsche’s famous “God is dead” was not a metaphysical speculation about an ultimate reality, but a diagnosis of the state of European culture and its direction. How to escape nihilism was Nietzsche’s most persistent problem (both in the presence, and in the absence of God).
