Michael Burry (born June 19, 1971) is an American investor, physician, and hedge fund manager. He is best known for predicting and profiting from the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-2008.
- Education: Michael Burry graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics from UCLA and later earned an M.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Despite his medical background, his passion always leaned towards investing.
- Scion Capital: In 2000, using money from his own investments and from family, Burry founded his own hedge fund, Scion Capital. He ran the fund for almost a decade, achieving significant returns for his investors.
- Predicting the Crisis: Michael Burry is perhaps best known for recognizing early on the impending subprime mortgage crisis. Between 2005 and 2007, he made a significant bet against the U.S. housing market by shorting (betting against) subprime mortgage-backed securities. His predictions turned out to be correct, and his fund made substantial profits when the market collapsed.
- The Big Short: Michael Burry's story during the financial crisis was prominently featured in Michael Lewis's 2010 book, "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine". The book was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning movie in which Christian Bale portrayed Burry.
