He’s invested in more than 100 companies, including Uber, Twitter, Yammer, and many others. It’s difficult to nail down exactly what we discuss in our conversation because I had so many questions to ask him. Naval is an incredibly deep thinker who challenges the status quo on so many things. This is an interview you’ll want to listen to, think a bit, and then listen to again. Here are just a few of the many things we cover in this episode: • What a “typical day” looks like (not the answer I expected, and not one you’ve likely heard before) • How Naval developed his legendary reading habits and how he finds time to read no matter how busy life gets • How the internet has impacted book reading (both good and bad) and how to make sure you’re • getting the best information from the most reliable sources • What popular habit advice Naval thinks is BS and why • Naval’s habit stacking technique that helped him overcome a desire for alcohol and other potentially destructive habits • How Naval’s core values give direction to his life and how those values developed over time 00:00 - Intro 12:42 - How Naval consumes books and other media 17:40 - Naval riffs on habits 28:56 - Naval defines 'happiness' 39:07 - Naval's values 45:34 - Biggest mistake Naval's made 1:05:06 - Naval reacts to the education system 01:23:18 - How Naval makes decisions 01:44:09 - Naval explains what it takes to be a great founder 01:53:51 - Naval explains common mistakes he sees from people 01:55:55 - Naval riffs on the purpose of life -------- Subscribe to The Knowledge Project (Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3fz6u4X | Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2SSgCvT | Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2Wjw7iy) -------- FOLLOW US: ☞ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/farnamstreet/ ☞ Twitter: https://twitter.com/farnamstreet ☞ Shane Parrish: https://twitter.com/ShaneAParrish If you enjoyed this video, subscribe to our channel! #TheKnowledgeProject #ShaneParrish #NavalRavikantwww.youtube.comHoward Marks | The Knowledge Project #53On this episode of the Knowledge Project podcast, Shane Parrish speaks with investor and co-founder of Oaktree Capital Howard Marks. Here are some of the things you'll learn in this interview: 1. "My parents never congratulated me on anything I ever accomplished. It was just assumed that that’s what you were supposed to do. I sort of got used to that, and I’ve never done things for external validation as a result. It’s just the thing itself." 2. "I had a track coach in high school who was a remarkable person … And as you’d run past him in training, he’d say, “You have to make deposits in training so that you can make withdrawals for game day.” And so, as a result of this really intense training, we all look forward to actually track meets because it was so easy. We didn’t have to work nearly as hard." 3. "It’s sort of like a moral obligation. Somebody trusted you, and if that trust was misplaced, I always felt we should wear it, not the person who trusted us or me." 4. "You only have one shot to do something. And if you’re focusing on doing something with your life, if you make a choice, that cuts off other choices. You ought to wait until you find something that’s really worthy of the effort because you’re going to be making a heroic effort in any case." 5. "Never compromise when you’re hiring people. Good enough is not good. And people need to be trained. You can’t assume they know things just because they tell you they do."
