Key Messages and Interpretation
This book emphasizes the importance of having a latticework of mental models to develop a multidisciplinary mindset. These models should be used as simplifying tools, to augment your thinking so that you can make better decisions. Ultimately, the book is a good reminder of the power of thinking and practical philosophy and is best-approached with an open-mind (removing any pre-conceived cringe surrounding the stereotypical use of ‘mental models).
To me, this is what good non-fiction should be about. Learning from the mistakes of others (across relevant fields), through a collection of first-principle concepts, examples and sayings. As expected, each mental model is hammered home through examples.
And as always, reading this for pure entertainment, without applying the heuristics it teaches, would be a waste. Easier said than done. The book deserves a full-rating for the quality of the research across concepts. Please note that these mental models are more generic (but this book seems to be the best in the series).
Note: I have made a mindmap which shows all of the mental models across this 3-book series. Please see it here.
